Alice Academy (?????, Gakuen Arisu?) is a manga by Tachibana Higuchi, currently being serialized in the Hana to Yume sh?jo manga magazine. It was been adapted into an anime series, produced by Aniplex and Group TAC which spanned 26 episodes, originally premiered on NHK BS 2, between October 30, 2004 May 14, 2005. The anime was then translated and dubbed into English by the anime television network, Animax, who has broadcast it in its respective networks within Southeast Asia, South Asia, East Asia, and other regions.

Gakuen Alice or Alice Academy is the story of a 10-year old girl, Mikan Sakura, who is devastated when her best friend, Hotaru Imai, transfers to a special school for "genius" kids in Tokyo. Mikan runs away from home to seek out her dear friend, and soon finds that the school Hotaru transferred to, Alice Academy, is specifically for children who have special powers called "Alices". After a teacher at Alice Academy, Narumi, discovers that Mikan has a unique Alice, she is admitted into the school. The story is primarily about Mikan and her experiences at the academy.

Alices

In the story there are many types of Alices. The five main types of Alices are:
1. Latent Type - Most students at the school are in this class. Alices here are the most traditional, or better known as super powers. It's the most normal class and students here are of the serious type.
2. Technical Type - Just like its name, any experiment can create an Alice level. The Alices in this type are based on technology and research fields. Most students are involved in their individual works, so it's the quietest class.
3. Somatic Type - This type is not filled with inventions or practice unlike other classes. The Somatic Alices are based on the body of humans, animals, and other living things.
4. Special Ability Type - Basically, this class is for students with Alices that don't exactly fit in any of the other three classes. Their powers are different and the class is mixed. The specialty of the class can be described as chaotic or peculiar. However, some of the rarest Alice belong to this class.
5. Dangerous Ability Type - This is considered to be an extra type. The Alices in this category may be classified under one of the above types, but some characteristics make them dangerous to the school. These class is very different from all the others and could also be described as an occult.

Every Alice is of one of four shapes, that specify how much of it can be used and how often.
1. Childhood Alice: They start out as an Alice but grow up to be an ordinary adult.
2. Diffuse: The Alice is always available, but at a relatively low power level.
3. Intermittent: The Alice can only be used for a short period at any time, but at a relatively high power level.
4. Limitless: The Alice can be used as often and as much as desired, but each use impacts against the user's own life and can kill them if overused.

Mikan Sakura

Mikan is the protagonist of the story. She is is an extremely cute, energetic, and a good-natured girl, but her clumsiness leads her to trouble most of the time. While she is below average in academics and the school's star ranking system (at the start of the series), she has a strong willpower and a happy-go-lucky attitude. Her mottos, "Never Lose!" and "Never Give Up!" has carried her through countless trials in her life in the Academy. She is an orphan who used to live with her grandfather in the country. She has been friends with Hotaru since second grade. Mikan left her grandfather and her home to go after Hotaru when she transferred to Alice Academy. She was then accepted to Alice Academy by Narumi-sensei and could attend Alice Academy with Hotaru and many other children with extraordinary powers. 

Mikan's 'Alice', or magical ability, is the Nullification Alice, where she can protect herself from any Alice, which is the reason why the Academy administration keeps an eye on her, and also why she received a no star ranking. In chapter 70 of the manga, it was shown that Mikan has a second Alice, the Alice of stealing other people's Alice (revealed to be the her mother's Alice), which she didn't know she had. Both the Nullification Alice and Stealing Alice are considered to be rare and unique.

Hotaru Imai

Hotaru Imai is Mikan's best friend. She is extremely intelligent and rational. During the story, though she may appear to be rather cold and indifferent on the surface, it is apparent that she genuinely cares for Mikan. Her Alice is that of Invention, and during her time at the country with Mikan and her grandfather, she created many strange but useful inventions, often made to look like animals. Hotaru breaks the fourth wall by teaching the audience about her inventions. The other characters see her explaining her inventions to apparently no one. 

Hotaru cares for Mikan a lot. She has a strange way of showing her affections towards Mikan, which could be either painful or not. Mikan's smile always enlightens her, and she always tells Mikan to smile. Hotaru can be very protective of Mikan and she just enjoys teasing, or more like, torturing her many admirers, namely Natsume and Ruka.

Natsume Hyuuga

Natsume is a genius and ditches class frequently throughout the story. He is thoroughly unhappy with the school, and is suspicious of the intentions of adults. He is paired up as Mikan's "partner" by the their mostly-absent class teacher, Narumi. He possesses the Alice of Fire, and is classified into the Dangerous ability type. He is generally moody and silent, but seems to have softened only to Mikan. During the anime, there are hints that his family perished in a fire that burned down the village, which may have been due to Natsume's fire Alice. 

He is a pervert, which was proven in both the anime and manga, but he only harasses Mikan. He gets easily jealous whenever he sees Mikan getting too close with other guys like Tsubasa, Tono, and Narumi-sensei. He's in love with Mikan and he can be very protective of her.

Unlike his Alice, he is cool, calm and collected. He may appear cold and ruthless, but he actually has a caring side.

Ruka Nogi

Ruka is Natsume's childhood friend and often referred by Mikan throughout the story as "Ruka-pyon". He has a gentle and pleasant personality that balances out that of Natsume's. His animal pheromone Alice allows him to get cozy with animals, a fact that he is embarrassed about and is often blackmailed over but despite this, he often carries a rabbit with him. 

Though he usually stays away from girls, he has affections for Mikan. Because of his feelings for Mikan, he has a hard time complimenting her on how she looks. He had seen her in a genie and prince costume and he blushed at the sight of her. He is constantly teased by the 'Watching Over Ruka' group in the manga. Throughout the series, Ruka becomes more committed to liking Mikan, but she remains completely oblivious of his feelings.

He is constantly being paired up with Hotaru Imai by many fans. It seems like Hotaru does like Ruka, but she shows it through her blackmailing. He is, of course, the major victim of Hotaru's blackmailing, and tries to stop her whenever he can. Hotaru has tons of pictures of him showing his affinity towards animals and him wearing girl's clothes.

Narumi-sensei

Narumi-sensei is the homeroom teacher of Class B of the elementary division. He is rarely in the classroom and he often leaves his job to the substitute teacher. He teaches Japanese and he has a hobby of dressing up in strange outfits. Not a lot of students respect him, especially Natsume, but they listen to him because they don't want to be victims of his pheromone Alice.

When he was a student at Alice Academy, he was a Special Star student and he also did missions for the Academy like Natsume. He was the upperclassman that Reo looked up to. Later in the manga, it is revealed that he harbored unrequited feelings for Mikan's mother. It was also proven that he is not Mikan's father, but he made a promise to Mikan's mother that he will take care of Mikan during her stay in the Academy.

The most precious student to him is Mikan. The main reason here is because Mikan is the daughter of his senpai, Yuka Azumi. Narumi can see Yuka in Mikan, because they are very alike in terms of personality and looks. He watches over Mikan and protects her, as what he has promised to Yuka. He stands as the father-figure of Mikan, and she calls him father because she misses her grandfather. Narumi considered himself too young to be a grandfather, so Narumi asks Mikan to call him dad instead.
